Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Canon RF Mount Summary

The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Canon RF Mount is a fast standard zoom lens, which is designed specifically for APS-C format mirrorless cameras, such as the Canon EOS R10, and R7. It delivers a very useful 27-64mm full-frame equivalent zoom range, which allows you to cover everything from landscapes, interiors, street and environmental portraits to short telephoto portraits and everyday photography and video. With a constant f/1.8 maximum aperture throughout the range, the lens also provides excellent low-light performance and depth of field control, which is  ideal for both photography and video content.

This lens also benefits from Sigma’s updated optical design, which includes 17 elements in 11 groups, with four aspherical and four SLD elements that maintain sharpness and reduce chromatic aberration. Arguably, this Art series zoom even offers image quality, which is on par with prime lenses, allowing you to leave the primes at home and bring just this one zoom.

It features a compact size and internal zoom mechanism, with a design that is well balanced for handheld shooting with a Canon mirrorless camera, or on a gimbal, while the 67mm front filter thread is convenient for anyone who already owns filters in this popular size. The autofocus system is driven by Sigma’s HLA (High-response Linear Actuator), which is fast, quiet and accurate, and for video the lens benefits from minimal focus breathing for manual focus pulls, with a de-clickable aperture ring for silent exposure changes.

Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Canon RF Mount in More Detail

Constant aperture zoom lens with Prime Performance

The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art offers image quality comparable to a prime lens across the entire zoom range. It maintains an f/1.8 maximum aperture throughout, allowing for excellent low-light control with strong background separation.

Four high-precision aspherical and four SLD elements help to reduce axial chromatic aberration and sagittal coma flare, providing high resolution and accurate detail, even when shooting wide open.

Expanded Zoom Range with APS-C Coverage

Compared to the well-known 18-35mm f/1.8 Art, this updated lens extends the wide end to 17mm and reaches 40mm at the telephoto end. The result is a more versatile 27.2-64mm for Canon RF, allowing you to capture everything from landscapes to portraiture without needing to switch lenses.

Improved Handling with Lighter, More Compact Design

The 17-40mm f/1.8 is significantly lighter and more compact than its predecessor. It weighs around 535g and is compatible with 67mm threaded lens filters. The zoom also benefits from an inner zoom mechanism, so the barrel length stays constant during zooming and focusing, which improves balance on gimbals while helping to protect the lens from dust and moisture intrusion.

Lens Coatings and All-Weather Construction

Flare and ghosting are minimised thanks to the use of Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating, which helps to maintain contrast and clarity in backlit conditions. A dust and splash-resistant structure also adds durability, with a water and oil-repellent coating on the front element for easier cleaning after shooting outdoors.

Optimised Autofocus and Focus System

The lens uses Sigma’s well known HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) to deliver fast, quiet and precise autofocus. This is ideal for both video and stills, especially when used on a gimbal or with eye or face detection tracking. Focus breathing is reduced too, enabling consistent framing when pulling focus during video.

Lens Barrel Controls

An aperture ring is included for exposure control, with de-click via a switch to allow smooth, silent adjustment while recording video. A separate lock switch prevents accidental changes to the aperture during shoots. The lens also includes two AFL buttons (assignable on compatible bodies) and a manual focus switch for quick changes while shooting.

Additional Features

  • Each lens is individually tested using Sigma’s proprietary MTF measuring system
