Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary Lens for Canon RF Mount Summary

The Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary Lens for Canon RF Mount is an ultra-wide prime for APS-C format mirrorless cameras. It offers a 12mm focal length, or a full-frame equivalent of 19mm, which is the widest view you can get from an f/1.4 lens in this format. That makes this RF mount lens brilliant choice for situations where you want to include as much as possible in the frame, whether shooting landscapes, city, or creating video content.

The bright f/1.4 aperture comes into its own in low light. It allows you to keep shutter speeds high when photographing night skies, interiors, or street scenes after dark, and it can produce a decent amount of subject separation for a lens this wide. This gives you more creative control over depth of field than you might expect from an ultra-wide in the APS-C format.

Sigma’s optical design features 14 elements in 12 groups, including two SLD and three aspherical elements. These help keep the image sharp across the frame and reduce aberrations, while coatings maintain contrast and colour when shooting into strong light sources. Sagittal coma flare is also well controlled, which is particularly useful for astrophotography.

Weighing only 230g and measuring under 7cm long this lens balances well on APS-C format Canon mirrorless camera bodies such as the EOS R7, and is easy to carry for travel or outdoor shooting. It’s also well suited to gimbal mounting, with fast, quiet autofocus driven by a stepping motor and minimal focus breathing when recording video. It also includes weather sealing, has a water and oil-repellent front element, and a programmable control ring in an ultra wide angle lens that’s perfect for both stills and video.

Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary Lens for Canon RF Mount in More Detail

Widest angle of view in its class

The Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary is the first APS-C lens to combine a 12mm focal length with an f/1.4 aperture. On APS-C cameras this gives a full-frame equivalent of around 19mm, which allows you to capture an entire scene, whether it’s a landscape, a city, or a group photo of fiends and family.

The bright f/1.4 aperture not only helps in low-light situations such as night street photography or if shooting in an interior, but also works for group selfies, vlogging, and creative wide-angle stills and video shots.

High optical performance from f/1.4

The optical design uses 14 elements in 12 groups, with three double-sided aspherical lenses and two SLD glass elements, which are positioned to deliver high resolution right from f/1.4. Aberrations are well controlled, and sagittal coma flare is minimised, so point light sources like stars remain sharp and well defined across the frame, which is especially ideal for astrophotography. Coatings have also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting, helping to maintain contrast and rich colour in challenging lighting.

Compact and lightweight design

By optimising the arrangement of double-sided aspherical elements, Sigma has kept the size and weight impressively low for an ultra-wide f/1.4. The lens measures just 69.4mm long and weighs around 230g, so it’s highly portable and easy to keep in your kit for travel or outdoor shooting. It also works well on shooting grips and gimbals, giving photographers and filmmakers even more flexibility in how they can use the lens.

Smooth, precise autofocus for stills and video

Focusing is handled by a stepping motor that moves a lightweight focus group with speed and accuracy. It offers reliable tracking for moving subjects and operates quietly for video. Focus breathing is well controlled too, which keeps the angle of view consistent during focus pulls, resulting in a more natural look.

Programmable control ring

Instead of an aperture ring, the Canon RF version features a control ring that can be customised to adjust a variety of functions to suit your workflow.

Weather-resistant build for outdoor use

A dust and splash-resistant structure protects the lens when shooting outdoors, and the front element has a water and oil-repellent coating that make it easier to clean. This gives you greater confidence for shooting in light rain, at the coast, or in dusty locations.

One of Sigma’s APS-C f/1.4 prime lineup

The 12mm joins Sigma’s other APS-C f/1.4 Contemporary primes with the 16mm F/1.4 DC DN for Canon, 23mm, 30mm, and 56mm, which all follow the same concept of combining excellent resolution with a compact, lightweight build. This consistency means you can collect the whole set of fast primes for your APS-C mirrorless camera, with the 12mm now offering the widest option in this, or any other series.
