Canon EOS C400 RF Mount Cinema Camera Summary

With updated ergonomics, a new sensor and RF lens mount, the Canon EOS C400 RF Mount Cinema Camera offers professional filmmakers an all-new compact, yet familiar design for their productions.

It is both smaller and lighter than the outgoing EOS C500 Mark II, but still manages to pack a 6K full-frame sensor with excellent light gathering capabilities, along with the latest EOS Cinema technology for professional filmmakers. These include Canon’s highly effective Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system with evolved EOS iTR AF X, while an entirely new file format based on MP4 joins existing support for Cinema RAW Light.

The EOS C400 camera is compatible with a range of Canon mirrorless lenses, which are known for their exceptional image quality, innovative designs, and superior optics. With the RF mount, EOS filmmakers now have access to the very latest optical technologies, including hybrid lenses like the new Canon RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM Lens  and the recently released RF 24-105mm F/2.8 L IS USM Z.

With the introduction of the RF mount into the Canon EOS Cinema lineup comes an updated body design which includes enhanced connectivity, and support for both live and virtual productions. The camera body is also adaptable enough to cater to a range of shooting styles whether handholding, shoulder mounted or from a gimbal stabiliser and introduces three Base ISO levels, with new Manual and Auto Base ISO modes catering for virtually any lighting conditions.

Canon CEOS RF Mount Cinema Camera in More Detail

6K full-frame BSI CMOS Sensor

The introduction of a 6K full-frame BSI CMOS sensor to Cinema EOS combines cutting-edge technology with high image quality for professional filmmaking. Among the benefits are 16 stops of dynamic range, triple base ISO, faster readout speeds and better low light performance.

Autofocus is also improved thanks to the sensor, with evolved EOS iTR AF X, which recognises faces and subject colours, and is able to identify and following subjects around the frame more quickly and more accurately.

Triple Base ISO

You can now achieve optimal signal to noise performance in any lighting thanks to the introduction of Triple Base ISO, which includes an Auto mode for automatic switching depending in the environment.

Oversampled 4K video

To achieve the highest quality, recording in 4K/2K at 4:2:2 10-bit resolution is possible through oversampling from the full-frame 6K sensor, without pixel binning. Additionally, Canon’s powerful DIGIC DV7 processor employs a Debayering process to minimise moiré and jaggies, ensuring clearer footage.

Combination Optical and Digital IS

Thanks to RF mount communication the camera body and lens image stabilisation (IS) work in unison to provide more powerful image stabilisation. In-lens optical IS works across pitch and Yaw, while in-body digital stabilisation is effective across 5-axis, covering Roll, Yaw, and Pitch on horizontal and vertical.

The effect equates to the same level of stabilisation achieved by mirrorless cameras such as the EOS R5 C and C70.

Introducing RF mount technology to high-end Cinema EOS

Canon’s RF mount has been integrated into the camera in order to harness the latest optical technology, communication and versatility. This provides support for the latest cutting-edge RF hybrid lenses, which bring excellent optical performance, ultra-responsive AF and IS. Other advantages include:

  • Advanced metadata allows for realtime frame-by-frame data capture as well as new features including Distortion Correction and Virtual Production / VFX workflows.
  • A more compact camera body thanks to the shorter flange back distance of the RF lens mount.
  • Compatibility with an extensive range of EF mount DSLR lenses and EF mount Cine lenses via an adapter such as the Canon Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R.
  • An all-new Canon PL-RF mount adapter opens up support for PL mount lenses, including Canon’s Sumire line.

  1. Full sensor AF area coverage
  2. Faster and more accurate performance
  3. People / Animal subject detection (Dogs/Cats)
  4. Human Face/Eye/Head and Body tracking
  5. Face priority and face-only modes

Professional recording formats with high frame rate recording

Canon’s new XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S significantly enhance MP4 recording capabilities with professional filenames, folder structure and metadata capture, which is akin to CRL and XF-AVC.

XF-AVC S / XF-HEVC S key benefits

  • Filenames include additional information including Camera index, Reel no. Clip no. etc.
  • Main and MP4 proxy maintains filename
  • Frame metadata is retained, including position, Gyro etc. which can be utilised for post production

More manageable folder structure

It’s possible to use a similar folder structure as Cinema RAW Light when using XF-AVC S / XF-HEVC S. This provides total consistency regardless of which video format is employed for a more streamlined workflow.
