Sigma 17mm f/4 DG Contemporary Lens Black for Sony E Summary

The Sigma 17mm f/4 DG Contemporary Lens Black for Sony E is a compact full-frame ultra-wide-angle prime lens for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. It is from Sigma’s Contemporary I Series and is the widest model in the range, while also being Sigma’s most portable ultra-wide-angle full-frame optic.

With its 17mm focal length, the lens captures a broad field of view that suits landscapes, architecture, interiors and environmental scenes. The f/4 aperture keeps the lens small and lightweight, making it easy to carry for extended periods, while a close focusing distance of 12cm with 1:3.6 magnification allows for dramatic wide-angle close-ups and exaggerated perspectives.

This version uses Sigma’s updated DG naming, reflecting the move to mirrorless-only lens production. It is well suited to photographers and videographers who want an ultra-wide option in a compact, travel-friendly lens for Sony full-frame cameras.

Sigma 17mm f/4 DG Contemporary Lens Black for Sony E in More Detail

Optical image quality

The 17mm focal length delivers a very wide field of view, which is suitable for landscapes, cityscapes, architecture and interiors. Despite its compact size, image rendering is high across the frame, with controlled distortion and good edge performance for ultra-wide subjects.

The optical design consists of nine elements in eight groups, including two SLD elements and three aspherical elements. This helps manage aberrations and maintain clarity across the frame, particularly towards the edges, which is important when working with ultra-wide compositions where edge sharpness is often desirable.

The short minimum focusing distance allows subjects to be positioned close to the lens, creating strong foreground emphasis while still capturing a wide background, which is useful for creative compositions.

Autofocus operation

Autofocus is quiet and reliable, supporting both stills photography and video recording. Focus acquisition works smoothly with Sony’s autofocus systems, including continuous AF and subject tracking on compatible camera bodies.

Video

For video, the lens offers stable framing during focus transitions, which reduces visible focus shifts. Its small size and low weight make it easy to use handheld or mount onto a stabiliser.

Handling and controls

As the smallest and lightest ultra-wide lens in Sigma’s full-frame range, the 17mm f/4 balances comfortably on any Sony mirrorless camera. The all-metal exterior provides a solid feel, while the simple control layout is straightforward to use in most shooting situations.

An aperture ring allows for adjustment directly on the lens, or via the camera when set to Auto. Knurled metal surfaces on the lens hood, focus ring and aperture ring improve grip and tactile feedback. There’s also a rubber seal around the mount, which protects against dust and moisture ingression.
