Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH Lens Black Anodised Summary
With a wide angle of view, the newly developed Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH Lens Black Anodised is ideal for everyday subjects including landscape photography, street photography and photojournalism.
The latest M mount lens for Leica rangefinders boasts a short minimum focus distance of 0.4m, enabling you to capture unique compositions and dynamic angles with exaggerated perspectives. The lens’ black design complements M system cameras, whether you shoot with an existing model, or the scratch-resistant M11-P Camera in Black Finish or chrome finished M11-P Camera in Silver, which were released simultaneously in October 2023.
With a Summicron-M design the wide f/2 aperture is made to create a shallow depth of field, emphasising the subject, although wide a 28mm wide focal width, this lens will inherently render a deeperdepth of field.
Leica’s optical design comprises 9 elements in 6 groups, and the Summicron-M 28mm f/2 aspherical lens is extremely lightweight at just 275g. The exterior design is refined, with premium materials and precise craftsmanship, complementing the optics with great aesthetics and beautiful image results.

Improved minimum focus distance
The improved minimum focusing distance of 40 centimetres on this wide-angle lens is a noteworthy feature for photographers, and it’s made possible by a unique dual-curve mechanism developed by Leica’s skilled engineers. This mechanism enhances the rotational range of the distance ring compared to the previous lens model, allowing you to get even closer to your subjects while maintaining focus.
One key advantage of this lens is its compact prime design with a focus ring that enables exceptionally quiet, smooth, and easy adjustments across the entire focusing range. This makes it a great choice for capturing images without disturbing your subjects, especially in situations where silence is important.
Focusing with this lens is primarily managed through the M camera’s rangefinder for distances up to 70cm. Beyond that range, from 70 to 40 centimetres, you have the flexibility to use alternative methods such as the live view display, the Visoflex 2 accessory, or the Leica FOTOS app.
This adaptability in focusing methods adds to the lens’s versatility, making it suitable for a wide range of photographic scenarios, particularly when you need to focus on subjects at close distances.
Optimised design
The Leica Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. combines refined technology, premium materials and precise craftsmanship. Its layout of nine lenses in six groups ensures images that are rich in contrast and detail, embodying the world-renowned quality of Leica lenses. The same high standard is evident in the integrated round hood, which can be effortlessly adjusted with a single twist, enhancing both convenience and the range of photographic possibilities.
