Hasselblad XCD 38V f/2.5 Lens Summary

Joining the release of the 100 megapixel X2D 100C camera are three new XCD lenses, including this wide angle Hasselblad XCD 38V f/2.5 Lens. It offers a 38mm focal width (30mm equivalent in full-frame format), with a series of new features for X System photographers.

This compact prime delivers top-class optical performance and is capable of rendering a resolution of over 100 megapixels thanks to three aspherical lens elements within an arrangement of 10 elements. A wide maximum f/2.5 aperture allows you to capture desirable shallow depth of field results and work in low light, making the XCD 2,5/38V lens ideal for photojournalism, indoor and outdoor shoots.

Hasselblad has included an upgraded leaf shutter with flash synchronisation at all speeds up to the maximum 1/2000sec, when combined with Hasselblad X cameras. The shutter is fast and quiet, complemented by a newly designed focusing module, which delivers exceptionally quick and accurate focusing, and the lens has a focus ring as well as a customisable control ring.

A convenient push and pull mechanism in the focus ring enables you to easily change from AF and MF and when in MF mode, you can easily check focus distance and DOF readings. The control ring can be customised for quick access to your preferred function.

High resolving XCD lenses

An optical design includes 10 lens elements arranged in 9 groups, with three aspherical elements. The entrance pupil position is 65mm in front of the image plane, which is the correct position of the axis of rotation when making a panorama image, by combining individual images of a scene. When images are imported to Phocus, distortion is automatically removed to save time when editing.

Three lenses were released simultaneously, with this wide angle prime, together with the standard XCD 55V f/2.5 lens and short telephoto XCD 90V f/2.5 lens. Together they provide ultra-high resolution and new features for professional photographers working in the studio or in the field.

Precision Hasselblad optics for outstanding images

The Hasselblad lens is able to capture the most subtle nuances of light and shadow, with excellent resolution and colour reproduction. A medium format camera sensor has a large area with high pixel density, posing stringent requirements for the precision of the lens. Starting with the selection of high-quality glass, Hasselblad engineers carefully grind each lens to perfect its optical quality and meet the resolution requirements of 100 million pixels.

The XCD 2,5/38V lens features ten elements in nine groups, including three aspherical elements and three ED elements. Through this design, the lens is both compact in size and also improves light transmittance and suppresses chromatic dispersion, for stunning results.

Powerful smaller leaf shutter

The leaf shutter is a powerful component in Hasselblad’s medium format system and the XCD 2,5/38V lens is equipped with an upgraded leaf shutter which, despite being smaller, maintains the same precision performance as its predecessors. In addition, this ultra-compact shutter delivers flash synchronisation at all speeds up to 1/2000s.

New Fast, light and accurate focusing module

The upgraded focusing module in the Hasselblad XCD 2,5/38V Lens includes a linear stepping motor and a lighter, smaller focusing lens group. These effectively eliminate any backlash from the lens group moving and, coupled with the PDAF technology of the X2D 100C, mean the focusing lens group can quickly reach the focusing position and achieve a precise stop. The result for photographers is fast, flexible and accurate focusing.

Intuitive control

The lens is comfortable to use and intuitive in the hand, fully supporting rather than distracting from your creative process and the focus and control rings are fine-tuned for a smooth and satisfying experience. A simple push and pull of the focus ring changes from AF to MF mode, where intuitive scale marks keep focus distance and DOF clear at a glance. The control ring can be customised for quick access to preferred features, resulting in a more convenient and efficient shooting experience.

Familiar, yet new aesthetic

The XCD 2,5/38V lens is a precision-crafted metal lens with a focus ring and a newly added control ring, both of which are delicately engraved with a Hasselblad "H" logo. The design is created using a precise 0.3mm drill bit and is a nod to the memorable look of the HC/HCD lenses. Whether paired with X-system or 907X cameras, this new lens is both a homage to the past while standing on its own as a unique, elegant statement.
